- How does PDF unlocking work?
- If you know the password, the tool decrypts the PDF and outputs an unprotected version with no password and no permission restrictions. You'll need to enter the original password — there's no way to bypass encryption without knowing the password.
- Can it remove passwords I don't know?
- No. PDF encryption is real cryptography — there's no backdoor. If you don't know the password, no legitimate tool can remove it. SanctumPDF only unlocks PDFs when you provide the correct password.
- Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
- No. Unlocking runs entirely in your browser using QPDF compiled to WebAssembly. Your file and password never leave your device.
- What restrictions can it remove?
- Once you provide the password, the tool removes the open password, the owner password, and all permission restrictions (printing, copying, editing, form filling, etc.). The output PDF has no protection at all.
